Badfish: Stories from the Dark House

by Chuck Murdoch

From Badfish:

I’m a bad fish, and this is my story.

On Wednesday, September 14, 1994, at precisely noon, my life ended. It happened when I found myself suddenly surrounded by a plainclothes squad of robbery-homicide cops who comprised the CCAT – Career Criminal Apprehension Team – of the Long Beach Police Department.

A life can be irrevocably stolen in the blink of an eye. One moment I was lounging in the narrow alley behind the tiny apartment where my girlfriend Rose lived with our baby daughter Lottie Bell and her brother Eric, and the next moment, I disappeared. I got snatched away by police detectives in an orchestrated operation that would have made the CIA envious.

I was taken for a long ride from which there seemed no return. My life was taken from me because the police then wrongly convicted me of the capital crime of robbery-murder.
